Watching Thai, Singapore, BBC, Fox, CNN, Jazeera, and Sweden news. Another day commuting between home and Openmind Training Center.
Another day commuting between house and our Openmind Training Center, consulting with talented, energetic volunteers, Bruna from Brazil, Goran from Croatia/Canada, Wojtek from Poland and of course online friends, ex trainees, campers, volunteers too, and our OMP lady of the House, Kai, plus ex camper Yami and the operator in chief TT J . All Openmind trainees of course being repatriated for an indefinite period back to their homes, villages. No campers this April! Literally distancing, isolating!
Corona, corona, I hide away
The Thai Lao Bridge is closed, no inbound flights to Thailand allowed. Some volunteers left while there was time, called back by their governments, or for personal reasons. Now a Thai curfew from 10 pm, so no late street, club stalkers, only a late night stroll in the garden, to the delight of hungry mosquitoes! Travel between provinces also becoming restricted. Always wear a mask, lest you be regarded as a d...ty farang by the commander of health in Thailand.
3 months ago, we were working hard to find funding for 2020, our projects, camps, facing a tough commercial competition. Volunteering had turned into volunteer tourism, backpacking became an expensive fashion, and big business entered and vacuum cleaned the ‘volunteer market’. NGOs like OMP suffered.
Camping to learn
Learning Camps with Openmind Projects
Light in the tunnel
A light in the tunnel was a promise by Google allowing us a monthly budget of 10 000 USD to promote our work online, with one condition. ‘Your ads must be professional, successful! A good response rate is required for Google to allow us the same budget in the future. Volunteer Bruna from Brazil is working on this together with our TT and soon our first ad will be online! Look for it!
Migrating our website
Google does not like Joomla, and our www.openmindprojects.org is a bit slow to load. With today’s impatient web visitors, you need to be fast, even though you would have thought; they have all the time in the world today! Wojtek from Poland is working to please Google by migrating our site to the greater platform as is already our other site www.openmindprojetcs.org/action, which is highlighting our 3 pillars: camps and campers, training center and trainees, communities and village/migrant children. Visit it!
Visibility is King
Then again, a small NGO like OMP must always work hard to remain visible to the world, a daunting task! Volunteer Goran from Croatia, but working in Canada, is helping us. He is listing OMP on important international websites/organizations featuring NGOs like OMP, Moving world, Volunterworld, Helpfree. And he is going to ask for volunteer reviews via the increasingly popular Trustpilot. You may be asked! Please do! That will be a welcome help! Of course, you can already find us by searching for OMP, or go to Idealist!
Riot Games League of Legends Dawnbringer Karma Charity campaign.
We are vetted, approved by Global Giving, which brings me to our most imminent light and hope: the Riot Games League of Legends Dawnbringer Karma Charity campaign. League of Legends players have raised $6 million for the Social Impact Fund, which will be distributed to 46 non-profit organizations around the world as voted by the community. Openmind Projects is one!
Any help is welcome help in these dire days.
Any amount going to OMP will be a welcome help in these dire days. However, that does of course not prevent us from working hard to being on the safe side by going fundraising on our own for a future beyond the Corona! More about that later while we wish you a Happy Easter and a Happy New Year, depending on where in the world you happen to read our reflections!
Greetings from the OMP team
